Bluffing in online Poker
When a casino player makes a bluff, he is attempting to make his opponents think that he has a strong hand, although he is actually holding a weak hand. When the other poker players think that he has a strong hand, perhaps a Full House, he can force them to fold and give up their fight for the pot. This leaves him as the winner of the game.
Bluffing is also one of the most exciting strategies in poker. When a poker player makes a bluff, he puts on the shoes of an actor. He should act that he was dealt a good card, and then, being sure that he will win, he may bet or raise. If an opponent catches him to be just acting out, this opponent will call his bet or match his raise. Then, since he has a poor hand, he will certainly lose.
The act of bluffing should never be done regularly by a poker player because the desired results of the bluff will no longer happen. So when should a poker player make the bluff?
During the early rounds, a poker player should bluff when he receives an unusual combination of cards. By the word “unusual”, this means that the casino player, in the next round, may eventually get that needed card to form a relatively strong hand.
Since the poker game is at its early stages, the opponents will tend to believe that no one has yet formed a strong hand. Thus, they will raise. This bluffing is meant to build the pot so that the skilled poker player may obtain his highest possible win.
Should a casino player make a bluff when is playing against people who are sound poker players? Making a bluff may sound suicide against such players. But a poker player may still make a good bluff even when he is up against opponents who consider themselves quite good in calculating poker odds. In fact, a poker player may use such skills of his opponents to his own advantage.
This can be done when a poker player is alert to opportunities presented to him. For example, the three community cards have the same suit, perhaps all are Spades. To bluff, a player will raise his bet. This gives the impression that his two personal cards are also Spades (even when in reality, his cards are not Spades at all). His opponents will believe that his hand will form a Flush, which is a relatively strong hand.
By calculating card odds, the opponents who are sound poker players will fold, leaving the poker player who made the bluff to take the pot. Of course, when using such a situation to bluff, a poker player should also know his card odds.
