Poker Odds

“Poker odds” is one of the most important knowledge that every poker player should have. If a poker player has no idea about poker odds, he will be similar to a soldier fighting in a war with no idea how to use his ammunitions. This is why poker players who are serious about the game dedicate their time in understanding poker odds.

If a player wanted to search useful ideas about poker odds, he is usually faced with tables with numbers expressed as percentages. This is because poker odds refer to the probabilities that certain hands or card combinations will be dealt or drawn. But what if the poker player is not mathematically-inclined and the roster of percentages leaves his head spinning dizzily? Does this mean that he should quit poker?

Of course not. No decent poker player quits at the first sign of trouble. If too many numbers make a poker player discouraged, then he should go around the numbers and create his interpretation of poker odds. Once he has acquired of interpreting the poker odds, then he will have a better grasp of the percentages.

The most basic thing to understand about poker odds is that the stronger is the hand, the lesser is the probability of getting that hand. For example, between a Full House and Quads, the stronger hand is the Quads. Since this hand is stronger, it is more difficult or rarer to have this hand.

When translated to numbers, the possibility of getting Quads is 0.25% or 407 to 1. This implies that out 408 ways, forming a Quad will happen only once. The Full House, on the other hand, has poker odds of 0.74% or 136 to 1. One can easily interpret this by stating that out 137 combinations, getting a Full House happens only once.

Good interpretation of percentages, however, does not there. A poker player, who is not mathematically-inclined must compare the poker odds of the hands to each other. For example, if the probability of getting Quads is only 0.25% and the poker odds of getting a Full House is 0.74%, one can see that getting a Full House is three times easier than getting Quads.

Another basic thing that must be understood is that poker odds do change as the game continues. The change is generally in favor of the players. For example, if a poker player is holding two personal cards of the same suit, and on the turn or third round of betting, one community card has the same suit with those held by the player, the probability of getting the second community card with the same suit was computed to be 19.1%.

And if the second community card has the same suit, the probability of getting a third suited community card slightly increases. In numbers, the probability becomes 19.6%. This is less than one is to five, yet a poker player can better decide if he will bet or fold if he knows the poker odds.
