The Advantages of an Effective Table Image

Poker players often commit the mistake of treating table images as only a way to read into other players' behavior. However, if one looks closely at how one's own table image could influence the behavior of other players, then one could surmise that creating an effective table image would provide a strong advantage against other players.

The main idea behind creating effective table images is that, since your opponents could not see your hand, they could only act upon your hand through assessing them. They would do this by keenly observing your physical and game behavior, or in short, your table image. Therefore, one could create a table image so as to lure one's opponents into acting in such a way that it would be advantageous to your position.

A simple example of an effective use of table image is if one has a table image of a bluffer. If you elicit a table image of a bluffer in such a way that other players would be wary of folding, then most often they would call and raise you, in an effort to render your bluff useless. However, if they do call while you are holding a strong hand, then you have effectively increased the pot and your winnings without even having to slow play.

However, do take note that table images are created throughout the game, and not at each round. Creating a consistent table image would be helpful in making your opponents act in your favor. The key to this is pattern. If opponents see a pattern in your behavior, then most likely they will act according to that pattern.

If you play erratically, then your opponents may have a difficult time reading your cards and behavior, but you will also have not gained control over your opponents' actions. And in poker, control, and not concealment, is what is to be aspired for if one wants to win.

Think about it: if opponents have no clues whatsoever as to what cards you are holding, then they will act only according to their hand. However, if you create an effective table image, then most likely opponents will act according to their perception of what your hand is. This means that you will not only accurately guess the strength of their hand; you could also manipulate the pace of the game.

Remember: good poker strategies include effectively creating your own table images, and not only profiling other players' table images. If you incorporate creating a table image in your strategy, assess the situation of the table first, and then create a pattern of behavior so as to lure your opponents into acting predictably, and acting in your favor. Through constant practice, one will not only be equipped with the skill of creating an effective table image, one will also be closer in bringing home the pot.
